It's back to school! And to start off on the right foot, we have some great news we've been working on for months to announce: we are reintroducing bottle deposits in the wine sector 👏🏻
In addition to being delighted to be the first wine brand to introduce a deposit system, our goal is to focus on the circular economy and reduce our carbon footprint.
Thomas, our co-founder, talks about it: “ We've been thinking about this deposit project for several months and today we are happy to see it come to fruition. Reusing a bottle instead of recycling it allows us to save nearly 50% of water. We are already collaborating with around thirty committed stores in Lyon, and soon in Paris in December. Our goal is to extend this process to businesses, caterers, and restaurants. »
A BOTTLE COMMITTED FROM A TO Z
Whether purchased in-store and then enjoyed at home or ordered in a restaurant, a glass bottle is strong enough to be washed and reused up to 50 times. Our original desire for the project was to find the best way to cyclically reuse wine bottles, to benefit the planet and the local economy. We chose tobottle near us, 60km from Lyon in Les Pierres Dorées.
We also surrounded ourselves with top partners, notably the Lyonnais Rebooteille to give birth to the project. Rebooteille offers a deposit system in full development to collect and wash bottles from businesses in Ain, Loire, and Rhône. The principle : the customer easily identifies the deposit bottles on the shelf with the help of a sticker that indicates the deposit and pays a 50-cent deposit at the checkout. After enjoying the bottle, it must be rinsed and then returned to the partner store of their choice to get their deposit back. The store stores the empty glass bottles in crates and Rebooteille comes to collect them before transporting them to the industrial washer. The loop is closed when the washing center sends them back to the partner producers, in our case, to our bottler, to close the reuse cycle.
Johann Perrat, founder of the grocery store 3 Ptits Pois in Lyon explains his enthusiasm for the deposit system:
“ At 3 Ptits Pois, we have unofficially set up a deposit system for about ten years with the small producers we work with, because we are sensitive to reducing the carbon footprint. Dairy products, local beers, baby food jars… are products that are already deposit-eligible at our store. Since March, we have been collaborating with Rebooteille, which allowed us to add Oé to our catalog, a real revolution because wine is rare or even non-existent in the deposit system. The best thing about Rebooteille is having a single contact and process for multiple producers. In addition, we have real indicators on the system, we can measure return rates and thus showcase our commitment.”
GETTING INVOLVED AS A CITIZEN IN THE COLLECTIVE EFFORT
Only 35% of bottles are reusable and deposit-eligible in CHR*. These are mainly juice, beer, and other beverage bottles. Our goal: innovate to be the first to launch this service for wine bottles with the ambition of using 100% of bottles from the deposit system and deposit-eligible again once emptied.
